Bank of Valletta strives to keep abreast of the field by utilising the most up-to-date technological innovations. Nevertheless, digital technology cannot give the necessary protection to customers when drawing cash from an ATM if the surroundings are unsafe, as is the case highlighted in the photograph.

Last May, I drew the attention of the bank’s security department about this issue.

Today, after a number of e-mails and several phone calls, the situation did not change.

During weekdays, the condition at the ATM featured in the photograph is an invitation for an accident to happen!

Bank of Valletta itself gives a number of security tips regarding the use of ATMs (www.bov.com/Content/atm-security-tips):

“Don’t be the weakest link. We’ve compiled a list of simple practical tips for you.

“When using an ATM, please take note of the following safety measures:

“• Be aware of your surroundings.

“• Before inserting your card, check to ensure that there is nothing unusual on or around the ATM, especially just around the card reader slot.”
