A month ago, we lost a precious member of the family, Rita, our sister, after a courageous battle.

Rita was a nurse who worked in the chemo ward at oncology section. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with terminal illness and so she knew from A to Z what she was going to go through.

She was a very dedicated nurse and this can be vouched by many relatives who used to accompany their loved ones for chemo, which can be very daunting with all its side effects. Now I realise, with hindsight, how tough it is to work at Cherne Day Ward. When I used to accompany Rita for her chemo session, the nurses were really rushed off their feet. Nobody can thank them enough for the endless care of the most vulnerable patients.

Apart from being a nurse, Rita was always there for all the family. All my brothers and myself rallied round her when anyone needed some advice with regard to our health. I must thank all the doctors and nurses who looked after her during her aggressive, unrelenting illness. A special mention goes to Josephine, who was Rita’s colleague at Cherne Ward and her best friend. During Rita’s illness, Josephine always helped her accordingly. Thank you very much, Josephine. Rita relied on you and knew you were there when she needed you most.

A word of praise goes to the medical staff at palliative care. They are so dedicated and have a nice word to each and every one. Considering that palliative care means the end to all suffering, the staff members are very professional. Special thanks to the doctors who looked after her, one of whom was very appreciative of Rita’s work with terminally-ill patients, when Rita worked as a nurse. I have witnessed it myself, when he thanked Rita on her death bed, for her good work towards the patients. For me, that was a big achievement and great satisfaction. I must not forget the nursing staff, who all strive to treat all the patients with dignity. Special thanks go to some of them, who walked the extra mile with Rita and our family and found time to say some comforting words. A hug did not go unnoticed. We appreciated it very much. Thanks to all involved.

On behalf of my sisters and brothers, I wish to express our feelings towards our sister Rita. We will surely miss you, dear Rita. We loved you in life and surely won’t forget you in death.

Thanks, Rita, for all you’ve done! You were always a shoulder to lean on.

May God grant you eternal rest.
