A teenager in Mexico City has died after a love bite from his girlfriend led to him suffering a stroke.

Julio Macias Gonzalez, 17, reportedly suffered convulsions shortly after he had returned from an evening with his 24-year-old girlfriend. He died before emergency services could take him to hospital.

Doctors believe a love bite on Gonzalez's neck caused a blood clot and led to the young man suffering a fatal stroke.

Mexican media have reported that the man's girlfriend has now gone into hiding, as Gonzalez's family have blamed her for his death, saying they were always opposed to his relationship with the older woman.

A love bite is caused by excessive biting or sucking of soft spots in the body, most usually the neck. The biting causes blood capillaries to burst, causing what looks like a dark bruise.

Gonzalez's case, while unusual, is not unheard of. In 2011, a New Zealand woman suffered a stroke and ended up with a paralysed left arm after receiving an overly-passionate love bite from their partner.
