A 27-year-old Gżira man who allegedly assaulted a police officer at the St Julian's feast after being told to stop swearing was denied bail today.

Police allege that a shirtless, drunk and foul-mouthed Darren Grech insulted and then punched a constable yesterday after he told him to pipe down.

Prosecutors argued that Mr Grech should be denied bail, given that he had already been involved in a similar altercation seven months ago.

Legal aid counsel Chris Chircop disagreed, noting that all the witnesses were police officers and that there were no legal grounds for denying Mr Grech bail.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella denied the bail application, saying that Mr Grech's history and conduct meant he could not be trusted.

This story was amended at 6.20pm to reflect the fact that Mr Grech allegedly punched a police constable, not inspector as originally reported.
