Recently, we residents of Sliema, in particular those residing at the Strand, had to endure an ear-splitting experience during the feast of our Lady of Stella Maris, on August 21.

Fireworks started being let off from Wednesday prior to the feast day and gradually continued in a calculated crescendo culminating on Saturday night with an extremely heavy ‘bombardment’, the firing site being Manoel Island in the direction of the Strand.

I love fireworks displays and enjoy watching them from a distance, because they too can be dangerous, but this ‘heavy bombardment’ lasting more than an hour  non-stop on Friday between 10 and 11pm  and, again, on Saturday is, in my opinion, irrational and of no real enjoyment. In fact, I think it is also very harmful and useless in celebrating a feast.

Is this form of celebrating in conformity with existing regulations?
