The police should re-open the investigation into Neville Gafa and the alleged corruption in medical visas for Libyan patients, the Nationalist Party said.

PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami said the police were too quick to say there was no evidence to charge Mr Gafa, describing the investigation a farce.

Exchanges between Mr Gafa and a Libyan whistleblower published in The Malta Independent yesterday show the Libyan asking to be refunded thousands of euro.

The published exchange does not include Mr Gafa's answers except for a "yes" when asked to meet.

Dr Fenech Adami said at no point in the published exchange is Mr Gafa denying any of the claims.

He said government was using "near fascist tactics" when the police asked the Attorney General whether criminal action could be taken against the whistleblower.

"I appeal to the AG not to entertain this idea and instead use the powers given to him at law to give legal immunity against criminal action to the whistleblower like he did in the Enemalta electricity theft cases so that we will be able to get to the bottom of this corruption."

Dr Fenech Adami said this was another case with roots in Castille.

Mr Gafa had been employed in the Office of the Prime Minister before moving to the Health Ministry when Konrad Mizzi became minister in 2014.

PN playing judge and jury - PL

In a reaction, the Labour Party accused Dr Fenech Adami of playing judge and jury on the case of medical visas and exposes a political party which is butting into police investigations.

Dr Fenech Adami has now attacked three institutions which are respected by the public - the police, the Attorney General and the Local Governance Board. This is a strategy adopted whenever any investigations fail to go the party's way, Labour said.

"This dangerous attitude is the same arrogant one dumped by the voters in the last general election."
