Dedicated walkers are spoilt for choice this week as two separate treks are being organised, one in Malta and another in Gozo.

Tonight’s activity will follow the Tal-Qlejja route, with departure set for 7.15pm sharp from next to the Mtarfa Clock Tower. The route will skirt Mtarfa’s military hospital and follow a country path down to Qlejja valley, popularly known as Chadwick Lakes. After crossing the Chadwick Lakes, walkers will proceed uphill by way of a footpath towards Dwejra ridge.

This valley is fed by up to seven different confluences and in winter is an oasis of wildlife and cascading waters after it rains. Along the way, trekkers will be able to watch the sun set across the Qlejja valley. The scenic route will take in views of terraced fields and beautiful countryside dotted with different Maltese features, the Mtarfa ridge, Mdina and other panoramic views of Malta from the Dwejra vantage point.

The course will follow a circular route, back down to the valley and up again to the starting point.

This is a moderate to challenging walk with two climbs thrown in for good measure, so it is well suited for those who wish to test their endurance and stamina.

The pace kept will be easy to moderate. Participants are expected to bring along an adequate water supply and a torch, preferably head-mounted. The organisers advise that mobile phones are not considered to be suitable illuminating devices and reserve the right to refuse participation to anyone not in possession of appropriate equipment.

Since this is also intended as a social event, attendees are invited to bring along nibbles to share along the way.
