Approximately 15kg of a white substance believed to be cocaine was discovered hidden in a car that had just arrived in Malta from Italy, police have said.

Two men - a 66-year-old Qormi man and a 23-year-old from Għajnsielem - are being held in custody to assist police in their investigations.

The discovery was made by members of the police force's drug squad working in collaboration with customs' law enforcement section. The white powder was found hidden in the rear of the car.

Police said that the search was a targeted one and came following weeks of intensive work. Magistrate Neville Camilleri is leading a magisterial inquiry.

In a separate case, police said they had arrested a 29-year-old Somali man in Paceville on suspicion of trafficking cannabis and cannabis resin.
