5.25pm - Adds Speaker's condolences

Josephine Sant, the mother of MEP Alfred Sant, has passed away at the age of 96.

Mrs Sant avoided the public spotlight and was rarely seen at public events with her son, a former Prime Minister.  

One exception was in 2008, when she was present at the Labour's Mile End headquarters to celebrate her son's return to the Labour Party leadership following a health scare. 

In a statement, the Nationalist Party offered Dr Sant and his family its condolences. 

The PL did likewise, saying Mrs Sant was a woman with strong values who served as an example to others.

Speaker Anġlu Farrugia extended condolences on behalf of parliament.
