Libyan government brigades say they are close to capturing the northern city of Sirte from Islamic State militants.

The forces say they captured the town's main mosque and a jail run by the militants' morality police.

The fighters have been supported by US air strikes since the beginning of the month which have helped accelerate the progress of the Libyan forces.

A media spokesperson from the Libyan fighters say dozens of Islamic State bodies were found in the newly captured areas, but it's not clear when those militants were killed.

Sirte was once an Islamic State stronghold and losing it would be a major blow to the militants.
