A series of talks, workshops and performances will come together under the umbrella of the Malta International Theatre Festival next month.

Spread over four days, the festival’s aim is to present a global picture of the diverse trends in theatre, while encouraging encounters between practitioners of the art.

It is a biennial festival that had its first edition in 2014 as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, since the official establishment of the Malta Drama Centre as the national performing arts school under the Department of Education.

Workshops will be hosted by international professionals from Sweden, Malta, Germany and Armenia. Topics vary from acting masterclasses to video projects.

The workshops will be followed each day by a discussion on a different subject, such as a lecture on traditional Armenian pantomime or the transposition of cultural heritage on to a contemporary platform.

The workshops and talks will be held in the morning on September 8, 10 and 11 at the Malta Drama Centre. Those wishing to attend will need to pre-book their place with the one ticket valid for all sessions.

Performances, on the other hand, feature theatre groups from Malta (Antler Theatre, Grokk Teatru, Soundscapes, The Thespians, and Zaranti Malta Cultural Association), the UK (Nordic group Frost Theatre), Germany (I Piselli) and Armenia (Yerevan State Pantomime Theatre).

Subject matters vary widely and include a trip back to the 1950s, a focus on multiculturalism, an interdisciplinary show and a commedia dell’arte act based in Malta.

■ The performances will be held in the evening on September 9, 10 and 11 at Fort St Angelo, Vittoriosa.  Every performance will be staged twice, with each night featuring a total of five different performances. Attendees for all events must be aged 16 and over.

Tickets for all events are available at www.showshappening.com.
