There were calls for "double double" champion Mo Farah to be honoured with a knighthood after his starring role on a glittering night for Britain in Rio.

Archbishop of York John Sentamu called on his Twitter followers to spread support for the gong, tweeting: "Mo Farah U are simply the Best Athlete Team GB has ever seen!Absolutely FANTABULOUS&Awesome!Congrats 4 the Double Double!BF Rt:now SIR MO"

Gary Lineker echoed the clergyman, tweeting: "Sir Mo!" and: "Wow! Just Wow! Rio is Mo Town. @Mo_Farah is surely the greatest long-distance runner of all time. The double double."

Singer and radio presenter Aled Jones said: "@Mo_Farah you are a legend!!! Congratulations - so proud to be British and to watch your utter brilliance!"

Baroness Benjamin tweeted: "Huge congratulations #OLYMPICCHAMPION #MoFarah,another #TeamGB great. You deserve to be Sir Mo as an inspiration to young kids who need hope"

Former England cricketer Graeme Swann tweeted: "Magnificent Mo Farah. What an athlete!"
