I think on the whole The Sunday Times of Malta gives good coverage to Church and religious issues. A recent example is the article ‘Priests not political if they speak out against high-rise projects’, (The Sunday Times of Malta, August 14). Many in Malta, including non-Catholics, share this stand.

However, in the same issue of the newspaper, the coverage of the bishops’ Pastoral Letter on euthanasia and value of life was rather poor. It is unfortunate that the whole text of the Pastoral Letter was not published in full. Instead, we had a résumé and a reference to the number of people who signed an online petition urging MPs to legalise euthanasia. Is this fair?

I would like to take this occasion to query the effectiveness of having the Pastoral Letter communicated during Mass through a recording of the Archbishop reading the Letter. I have my doubts as I saw many people distracted while this was taking place.

I do hope that the Curia’s communications office has done some research on how effective this modern approach is among churchgoers.
