Three Maltese students who have won scholarships from the Ian Tomlin Fund to study at the University of Edinburgh’s Ian Tomlin School of Music are being supported by Lions Club Sliema to further their studies.

The three students are Michael Cutajar, who is studying the clarinet, Beatrix Calleja, who is studying the clarinet and piano, and Gabrielle Sargent, who is a soprano.

While tuition fees are covered by the scholarship, the students still have to meet their own travel and accomodation expenses.

After the students applied for assistance from the Lions Club Sliema Arts Fund, the club decided to donate €1,000 to each student towards these expenses, considering that their acceptance to study at Edinburgh was ample indication of their capabilities.

Club president Lion John Rusher presented cheques to the students at the residence of past president Ian Lochhead and his wife Elizabeth.

He asked the students to keep in touch and they not only promised that they would, but also agreed to perform a small concert for club members in the near future.
