The newly-refurbished Madliena Lodge is hosting live jazz sessions outdoors in the garden lounge on Wednesdays and Sundays. Songstress Angie Vella Zarb features on selected dates, performing a large repertoire of jazz standards in swing, bossa nova, blues and ballad styles.

Tomorrow she will sing as part of a trio accompanied by Karl Galea (guitar) and Oliver Dega - briele (double bass). On Wednesday, and Wednesday, September 7 (eve of a public holiday), the sessions will be pared down to an intimate voice and guitar duo. The trio will return on Sunday, September 18.

Vella Zarb is a fresh new voice on the circuit, exploring a range of jazz styles with a focus on interpreting the feeling of the lyrics and melodies through improvisation.

A selftaught singer, she derives influence from the pioneers of vocal jazz as well as woodwind musicians. She performs with gypsy jazz ensemble Swing Nuages, The Elata Quartet (contemporary), and in various other jazz combos.

She recently also performed at the Malta Jazz Festival with the Fringe Youth Ensemble.

■ The sessions are free of charge and are held from 8pm to 11pm. For more information, visit www.madlienalodge.com.mt or call 2138 9000.
