Balzan kicked off their league commitments with a highly-entertaining 3-2 win over Mosta at the Hibs Stadium.

Balzan took control of proceedings from the outset and on six minutes Alfred Effiong picked Terence Agius inside the area but the young midfielder fired just wide.

Mosta responded on 23 minutes when Martin Vleck dribbled past two defenders and his low drive was saved by Balzan goalkeeper Ivan Janjusevic.

Balzan took the lead on 33 minutes when Bojan Kaljevic fed Agius inside the area and the Balzan midfielder beat Yenz Cini with a low drive.

The Reds doubled their lead on 41 minutes when Effiong connected to Grioli’s free-kick to head past Cini.

Mosta refused to throw in the towel and they pulled a goal back on 53 minutes.

Vleck moved past two Balzan defenders before hitting a curling shot that flew into the top corner of the net.

Balzan restored their two-goal lead on 62 minutes when Adrian Caruana was adjudged to have fouled Lydon Micallef inside the area and from the resultant penalty Kaljevic drilled the ball home.

But Mosta kept fighting and they reduced the gap a second time on 76 minutes when Paul Fenech handled the ball inside the area and Victor Oseghale converted the resultant penalty.

Balzan striker Bojan Kaljevic was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
