Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar is hosting its second ladies’ movie night on Sunday, August 28.

This time the film scheduled is Mamma Mia!, a 2008 romantic musical comedy adapted from the 1999 West End/2001 Broadway musical of the same name.

Based on the songs of the immensely successful Swedish pop group Abba, with additional music composed by Abba member Benny Andersson, the film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd who later went on to direct The Iron Lady, a biopic of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The film centres around Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) who sets off a chain of events when she posts wedding invitations to three men who could all potentially be her father. Meryl Streep stars as Sophie’s mother Donna Sheridan with Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård in the roles of her ex-suitors and possible fathers to Sophie. Julie Walters and Christine Baranski play the roles of Donna’s best friends.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it was a worldwide smash, certified as the biggest grossing film ever at the UK box office by the end of 2008.

The film naturally showcases several of Abba’s hit songs such as Money, Money, Money, Mamma Mia, Chiquita, Super Trooper and The Winner Takes It All. It also includes a hilarious end-credit sequence featuring the main cast dressed in 1970s garb singing Dancing Queen and Waterloo.

Patrons are invited to enjoy the screening in the garden of the 18th century Palazzo. This magnificent stately home, with its beautiful surrounding gardens, has been owned by the Scicluna family since 1898.

While the film night is open to all, it is primarily targeted at women. Doors open at 7pm with Happy Cocktail Hour between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. Fresh popcorn will also be available at the food bar.
