Renowned local duo The New Victorians are back with a piece of work that aims to bring their love for music and theatre together, while speaking out for causes they are passionate about.

Mara (Woman) is an original piece of theatre that celebrates the story of women by means of interactive sound design. The sound designer takes on the role of a performer, composing and manipulating sound live while interacting with the actors.

Mara is a multidisciplinary piece devised by the cast involving song, movement, poetry, dance, drama, elements of verbatim theatre and visual art. It portrays a journey through time, highlighting the fact that every story is worth telling, and that no voice should be silenced.

The production stars well-established local actresses Charlotte Stafrace, Bettina Paris, Mariele Zammit, Ruth Borg, Becky Camilleri, Corinne Camilleri, Tutzi Cassar, Tezara Camilleri, Nicole Carabott and Nicola Zarb, with composition and direction by The New Victorians.

This is the first theatrical production by the singing sisters Bettina and Philippa Cassar, following their debut album Seeker Seeker in 2015. With the help and support of Denise Mulholland, Polly March and St Michael’s Foundation, Mara will also be collaborating with ArtsExcel and visual artist Jamie Iain Genovese, whose recent work related thematically to the project and will be exhibited at the entrance of the venue.

The one-hour event is taking place at the Studio Theatre at the Manoel and will be held primarily in English, with some parts in Maltese. Performances scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday at 9pm are fully booked. However, an additional show has been programmed for Sunday at 6pm. This initiative is supported by the Malta Arts Fund.
