More than half the Maltese opt for Italy and the UK as a tourist destination, figures released today show.

The National Statistics Office said 54 per cent of Maltese prefer to visit Italy and the UK on holiday. 

The NSO said it was estimated that 104,331 residents went abroad between April and June, an increase of 9.3 per cent over the same quarter last year.

The number of tourist trips towards EU countries in the second quarter stood at 93,863, an increase of nine per cent over the same quarter last year.

Total outbound trips between January and June amounted to 207,795, a 20 per cent increase over last year.
