A Maltese artist is among the winners of the World Illustration Awards 2016.

The Guardian newspaper reported that the Association of Illustrators celebrated the innovative world of contemporary illustration with anything from gifs to digitally layered oil paintings.

The Maltese entry, Mala’s Morning Malaise by Julian Mallia, won the Advertising- New Talent Award.

Mr Mallia, a graduate of the University of Brighton, explained to the newspaper that the illustration was made to promote the short film Loophole.

It consists of three oil paintings that were scanned and digitally merged in a process reminiscent of photographic double exposure.
