Brain tissue is discernible in an embryo a few weeks after fertilisation. Etienne Grech (August 5) maintains that, until this happens, the embryo has no life. How a non-living embryo goes on to develop a brain that gives it life escapes me!

Moreover, the logical consequences of Grech’s theory are the discarding of unwanted embryos and abortion (before the brain is in place). I sincerely hope my medical colleague will think again about his position.
