The bring-in site in Triq tal-Qattus, Swatar. The bring-in site in Triq tal-Qattus, Swatar.

A few months ago I wrote several e-mails to the Birkirkara local council regarding a bring-in site in Triq tal-Qattus, Swatar. The two small skips in this particular bring-in site were unable to cope with the demand and trash very often ended up spilling onto the pavement.

Initially, the situation came back to normal. However, the local council later decided to install floodlighting and CCTV cameras in the area and to have only one skip instead of two. I asked the council why this was so and I was told that it was a financial issue.

It is unbelievable how the council could spend so much money on CCTV cameras and floodlighting, yet does not allocate enough in its budget for an extra skip.

It seems it is more interested in collecting money from fines and sending wardens to the area rather than providing a decent service to tax-paying citizens.

The local council must increase the number of skips in this bring-in site and the frequency with which these are emptied as soon as possible. The stench is unbearable in the area, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and mice.
