Newcastle are still searching for their first Sky Bet Championship point after they were beaten 2-1 by Huddersfield at St James’ Park, yesterday.

Rafael Benitez’s men had been hoping to bounce back from losing the opening game of the Championship season at Fulham last week but were deservedly beaten by David Wagner’s Terriers, who have maximum points from two games.

Nahki Wells put Huddersfield in front but Newcastle levelled on the hour when Dwight Gayle headed in the rebound after his penalty was saved.

However, the Yorkshire side restored their lead when Kasey Palmer found Jack Payne on a breakaway and made no mistake on 82 minutes to emphasise how difficult it will be for Newcastle to win promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Aston Villa secured their first league win since returning to the second tier at the second attempt as a Rudy Gestede double helped them to a 3-0 win over Rotherham.
