Rio Olympics officials irked by the "aggressive and rude" behaviour of some Indian delegates have threatened to revoke the accreditation of the country's sports minister.

Indian sports minister Vijay Goel received a letter from Olympic organisers after members of his entourage tried to enter restricted areas in the gymnastics, taekwondo and fencing venues, The Press Trust of India reported.

The letter noted that organisers had received multiple reports of the minister trying to enter accredited areas with unaccredited individuals.

"When the staff tried to explain that this is not allowed, they reported that the people with the Minister have become aggressive and rude and sometimes pushed past our staff," the letter said.

It went to warn the minister that should such events reoccur, "the accreditation of your Minister for Sports will be cancelled and his privileges at the Olympic Games withdrawn."

Goel subsequently downplayed the issue, writing on Twitter that it was simply "a misunderstanding".

"To my knowledge, we have been following all rules & regulations. We are committed to the spirit of Olympics & back our Indian players," he tweeted.

The warning letter adds to the gloom surrounding India's Olympic summer so far. The country of 1.3 billion people has yet to win a single medal, with fans noting that US swimmer Michael Phelps has now won as many Olympic medals -26- as India has in all its history.
