The response time for medical emergencies in Malta's north has been cut down to about five minutes this summer, a feat made possible by assistance offered by Red Cross volunteers.

As part of the project funded by the Voluntary Organisation Projects Scheme, the Red Cross are this year helping the hospital with emergencies around the northern coast.

When an emergency call is made, Red Cross teams are the first to be deployed and volunteers offer assistance within minutes.

Volunteers, who are in constant contact with Mater Dei hospital, arrive on site ahead of the ambulance and give hospital personnel a clear indication of what assistance is needed.

Speaking during a press conference this morning, Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli praised volunteers' dedication.

“No project is more important than that which saves lives, and I hope to see this project extended to the south of the island next year,” Dr Dalli said, following a tour of the Red Croos premises in Pembroke.

Red Cross Malta has some 100 volunteers who assist with emergency operations.
