Thomas Mueller has dismissed any suggestion Bayern Munich do not take the German Super Cup seriously as they attempt to end a four-year wait to lift the trophy when they face arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund this weekend.

While Bayern have won the past four Bundesliga titles, and the DFB-Pokal three times in the same period, the Super Cup eluded them in each of their three seasons under Pep Guardiola.

Dortmund beat them twice while Wolfsburg won the one-off fixture last season, with Bayern’s last win coming against Dortmund in 2012.

It has been claimed that Bayern Munich do not treat the game all that seriously, preferring instead to focus on being fit for the start of the season, but striker Mueller says that is not true.

“There’s a lot of prestige in-volved in this match,” the Germany international said.

“It’s a title that we’ve not won in the past three years and it’s always something special to play against Dortmund.

“There’s no game where we might say we don’t really care about it – there is a title at stake and plenty of prestige, even if the significance of the Super Cup is not as high as the Bundesliga or the DFB-Pokal.”

Bayern face Dortmund for the first trophy in the German season on Sunday, a week before the first round of the DFB-Pokal and just under a fortnight before they kick off the Bundesliga season at home to Werder Bremen.
