Championship new boys Burton will host Premier League Liverpool in the EFL Cup second round.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had to play away from home due to Anfield’s re-development, and were paired with the team managed by former Reds forward Nigel Clough.

Liverpool are the most successful team in the history of the League Cup, winning the competition eight times – most recently in 2012.

Premier League outfit Burnley will make the short trip to League Two Accrington for an en-thralling local derby clash.

England set for Spain friendly at Wembley

England will host Spain in a glamour friendly on November 15.

The Wembley fixture will be new manager Sam Allardyce’s first non-competitive match and comes four days after a World Cup qualifier with neighbours Scotland.

Allardyce cancelled a proposed friendly date to start his reign, with Croatia and the Czech Republic mooted as potential opponents, and will instead begin his tenure with arguably England’s toughest 2018 qualifier away in Slovakia.

Spain beat England 2-0 in Alicante in 2015 but lost on their last visit to Wembley, Frank Lampard sealing a 1-0 home win.

Defender Demichelis moves to Espanyol

Martin Demichelis has joined La Liga side Espanyol on a one-year deal following his departure from Manchester City.

Espanyol announced the deal for the 35-year-old defender on their official website.

The Argentina international played 31 times for Premier League side City last term before leaving the club this summer.

Prior to moving to Manchester in 2013, Demichelis had spells at River Plate, Bayern Munich and Malaga.

Crane is a pain for Werder analyst

Werder Bremen’s video analyst had to work overtime on Wednesday as a technical fault left him stuck above the team’s training field on a crane.

Mario Baric was filming the Bundesliga club’s training session in Emsland for analysis purposes when the crane he was on stopped working.

He was left stranded 30 feet above the ground as the players made their way back into the dressing room.

“It was short but sweet – we’ll send up some food when it gets dark,” said Bremen’s assistant coach Florian Kohfeldt, according to Bild newspaper.

It took staff over half an hour to get Baric back down on the ground safely, manually operating the crane to free the video analyst.

Escriba in, Marcelino out at Villarreal

Villarreal have named Fran Escriba as their new head coach.

Escriba replaces Marcelino, whose surprising departure was announced on Wednesday night just a week before the club’s Champions League play-off round first-leg clash with Monaco.

Manuel Pellegrini had been linked with a return to El Madrigal - having managed Villarreal to great success between 2004 and 2009 – but the Yellow Submarine have turned to Escriba.

The 51-year-old Spaniard guided Elche into the top flight after an absence of 25 years in 2013 before taking charge of Getafe last summer. He was sacked in April with the Madrid-based club in relegation trouble.

Ajax take Traore on loan from Chelsea

Ajax Amsterdam have taken Bertrand Traore on loan from Chelsea for the season.

The 20-year-old Burkina Faso international, who made his Premier League debut last December, arrives after striker Arek Milik moved to Napoli.

Traore will be reunited with coach Peter Bosz under whom he played at Vitesse Arnhem from 2013-15 on loan from Chelsea. He scored 16 goals in 14 Dutch league appearances at Vitesse.

Traore would be available for Tuesday’s Champions League play-off fixture against Russia’s Rostov, the reports added.

Soldado support

Roberto Soldado has thanked fans for their support following the news that he will undergo surgery to repair torn knee ligaments.

The Villarreal striker is likely to be sidelined for at least six months after suffering the injury just a week before the start of the new La Liga campaign.

The 31-year-old former Tottenham striker fell awkwardly during a pre-season friendly against Porto on Saturday.

Soldado posted a picture on Twitter of himself relaxing, with the message: “Million thanks for your support! Hoping to pass through the operating room to start to work and face this challenge.”

Soldado helped Villarreal finish fourth in last term’s top flight in Spain, and will prove a miss for at least the first half of the new campaign.
