A Singaporean chef who specialises in soy sauce chicken has become the first-ever street food vendor to be awarded a Michelin star. 

Chan Hon Meng's hawker stall Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle was handed the much-coveted award after inspectors from the world-renowned French food guide visited his stall. 

His first reaction upon hearing of his nomination was shock. 

"I asked them, 'Are you joking? Why would Michelin come to my stall?'" Chan recounted. 

A Michelin guide representative replied "We only judge based on the food, not the venue." 

With a portion of soya sauce chicken rice going for $2.50, Chan's restaurant might just be the cheapest Michelin-starred eatery in the world - and patrons are wising up. 

"Queue is too long and price is too cheap!" one reviewer noted on an unofficial Facebook page dedicated to Chan's stall. "If a Michelin-starred stall is selling a plate of chicken noodle at only $2.50, there is no hope for other hawkers."
