A pool used by Olympic divers in Rio di Janeiro has turned a bright shade of green, and Games organisers say they don't know why.

The contrast in colour between adjacent pools at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre stunned athletes and organisers, with the BBC reporting that the head of swimming's governing body, Pedro Adrega, was flabbergasted by the change.

Organisers soon issued a statement saying that water quality tests had shown that the pool was safe, though they admitted they had no clue what had brought about the change in colour. "We're investigating what the cause was," they said.

The change in colour quickly had tongues wagging on social media, while US Olympic diver David Boudia jokingly wondered whether the change in hue meant St Patrick's day was celebrated early in Rio.
