MEP Roberta Metsola has made a shortlist for an international award recognising outstanding people under the age of 40.

The 36-year-old Nationalist MEP is among 20 people from across the globe in the running to win a JCI Outstanding Young Person of the World award, from an initial batch of over 150 entries. 10 of the 20 finalists will be awarded at the JCI World Congress, to be held on November 3 in Quebec City, Canada.

Nominees were selected from among the winners of national JCI awards. JCI describes itself as "an international nonprofit organisation of young active citizens aged 18 to 40 who are engaged and committed to creating impact in their communities."

Dr Metsola began actively participating in politics as a university student, being elected vice-president of the Youth Convention on the Future of Europe, before working for the Maltese government and later as a legal adviser to the EU's high representative.

In 2013 she became the youngest female member of the European Parliament. Since then, she has worked on issues concerning LGBT rights, immigration, consumer affairs and privacy.

Last year she was named Parliament Magazine’s “MEP of the Year” in the field of justice and civil liberties.

The 10 eventual winners will be picked by a combination of a professional judging panel, as well as by popular vote.
