Game of Thrones, the TV adaptation of George R.R Martin’s popular book series The Song of Fire and Ice, is one of the most highly acclaimed series of all time.

Now, as the popular series moves towards its penultimate season, Universal Cable productions are looking to turn Martin’s other book series into blockbuster TV.

The author announced on his blog that TV executives at Universal Cable productions have acquired the rights to his Wild Cards anthology series.

Wild Cards includes a set of novels and anthologies by a collection of writers, edited by Martin and Melinda Snodgrass.

The series is set in an alternative history of post-World War II USA, in which a virus called “Wild Card” is unleashed on New York City, either mutating humans into superhero “Aces” or deforming them into “Jokers”.

"It is a universe, as large and diverse and exciting as the comic book universes of Marvel and DC (though somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent), with an enormous cast of characters both major and minor," Martin wrote on his blog.

The author himself won’t be involved with the development of the series, as he does not want to detract from writing the sixth instalment of Song of Ice and Fire, Winds of Winter. The second editor of Wild Cards, Melinda Snodgrass, will be the executive producer of the new TV adaptation.

"Of course, Hollywood is Hollywood, and nothing is ever certain in development," Martin wrote.

"But I think I hope I cross my fingers that the Wild Cards will be coming to your home screens in the next year or two."
