I refer to the letter by my friend Joseph Buttigieg entitled ‘British service pensions’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, July 17). Like myself, Mr Buttigieg served for a long time in the Royal Air Force and retired with a service pension. As he points out, our British service pension drama has dragged on for a long time.

I had sent an e-mail to Joseph Muscat on January 20, 2011, when he was Opposition leader, informing him that we had been promised a full service pension by both parties.

Only in 1997 under Alfred Sant’s government did this injustice start to be rectified. But after Dr Sant lost the 1998 election, the new government ignored the promises made regarding service pensions.

Dr Muscat replied to my e-mail on January 27, 2011, and told me: “I confirm that a new Labour government will continue the process started in 1997 under the Sant government to undo this injustice on your service pension.” Very nice and promising words indeed and I was stupid enough to believe him.

Both political parties are the same for me. They are only interested in your vote and not in your problem.
