Casa Apap Bologna, the first private community home for people with disability held an open morning to introduce prospective clients and their relatives. The home will be run by Hila (Home to Independence and Limitless Abilities), a new entity within Caremalta Group.

The home, located in Mosta, a few metres away from the parish church, will be offering respite services and can take up a maximum of 40 clients.

This €2.5 million project has seen the conversion of the late Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna’s residence into state-of-the-art facilities, with 25 bedrooms equipped in such a way as to enable clients to live as independently as possible.

The home also features three dining areas on separate floors, fully accessible bathrooms, a multi-sensory garden, as well as a multi-sensory and creativity room.

Casa Apap Bologna has been designed under an Access for All concept, which makes it accessible to people with both physical and intellectual disabilities.

A good number of people turned up to view the home and to discuss with management and staff services it will be offering. A number of people with disability already employed with Caremalta helped host visitors during the event.

New members of staff answered questions on how Hila and Casa Apap Bologna will be providing future clients with not just a home for a short while but also various programmes that will help discover the client’s full potential.

In fact, those who will be using the services of Casa Apap Bologna will be encouraged to actively participate in the running of the home wherever possible, while staff members will help them learn new skills to increase their independence.

Present and prospective members of staff at Hila will be undergoing a training programme leading to an Mcast level 4 Award in Disability Studies – to be held at Caremalta Academy’s training and development centre.

Visitors were invited to register for a live-in weekend between last Friday and today. Last year’s live-in experience was a success. Events will take place both within the home and outside. A second live-in is planned for mid-September.

All construction works at Casa Apap Bologna were carried out by Vassallo Builders Ltd, also part of the Vassallo Group, which this year is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

The same team which worked on Casa Apap Bologna has started construction works at Casa Santa Monica, Hila’s second home in the community to be opened in Qormi by the end of this year. Casa Santa Monica will be offering independent supported living services on long-term basis.
