As from January 2017, every secondary school student in Malta and Gozo will experience a minimum of one artistic production a year produced by creative professionals and presented through a curated programme.

This measure – one of the deliverables of Arts Council Malta’s Strategy2020 – is being accompanied by a call for expression of interest for events of a cultural and artistic nature targeting students in all years of secondary school, from Middle School to Senior School. Activities are to be held between January and June 2017.

This call – which is being issued jointly by Arts Council Malta and the Culture Directorate – is intended to enable creative practitioners to generate captivating, creative, innovative, original as well as already existing work for audiences in these age categories (11 to 16 years) and to provide the opportunity for these young people to experience at least one cultural activity as an extension to the curriculum covered during the scholastic year.

The call is open to artists, cultural organisations and creative enterprises which have already created specific work for young audiences or will be presenting new work in the coming months.

The call forms part of the Culture Pass, a new programme replacing the Culture Card, which was introduced in schools in 2011.

The new programme is designed to provide students in all years of secondary school with professional cultural and artistic experiences of the highest quality; complement the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum Framework and add value to arts education and other curricular subjects. It will also encourage creative practitioners to create and develop new work for young audiences and increase the programming capacity over longer periods with the purpose of connecting artistic and non-artistic disciplines to the students’ curriculum.

Participation in the Culture Pass grant scheme is based on a selection process and will be evaluated according to established criteria. The selection team will include representatives of the Culture Directorate, Arts Council Malta and the education sectors. Deadline for applications is September 12 at noon.

Guidelines and application forms can be downloaded online.
