Cycling: Trek-Segafredo cyclist Frank Schleck will retire at the end of the 2016 season. The 36-year-old, who is in Rio competing for Luxembourg at the Olympics, has decided he wants to exit the sport when he is still performing at a high level. He said: “There is never an easy way to stop doing something you love to do, but I’ve always wanted to retire at a level where I was still competitive and fit.” Schleck’s career highlight came in 2011 when he finished third in the Tour de France.

Canoeing: Canoe slalom training runs were cancelled on Thursday at Rio’s Whitewater Stadium after a power issue caused the pumps to stall on the eve of the Olympics opening ceremony. Training was halted in the afternoon and no more runs took place at the Deodoro X-Park in the north west of the city as organisers scrambled to fix the problem. The power problem, three days before the Canoe slalom events start, raises further concerns about Rio’s preparations.

Basket, NBA: Five-times All-Star guard Russell Westbrook has signed a contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA team said. The news is a consolation for the franchise, coming nearly one month after Westbrook’s fellow All-Star Kevin Durant left for Golden State Warriors. Terms of the contract were not announced, but multiple media reports said it was for three-years and $86 million. Westbrook recorded 18 triple-doubles last season, equalling the most in the NBA since Magic Johnson in the 1981-82 season.
