A rehabilitation programme for young people aged under 21 who are in prison awaiting judgement is being drawn up by a group of professionals in correctional services.

The programme is expected to include a structured and educational curriculum that is up to date with present social realities and addresses both formal and informal training for the development of personal and academic abilities as well as sports and employment opportunities.

The professionals drawing up the programme include experts in correctional education, forensic psychology, sports and criminology. They have been joined by Norwegian expert in young prisoners behaviour Kim Ehaugen.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela today visited the group, that was meeting at Ta’ Kandja and stressed the importance of educational activities for energetic young people who had not yet had the opportunity to be trained.

There are currently 11 men aged between 16 and 20 in jail.
