I refer to the article “TV presenter John Bundy to become new PBS chief” (July 30) and in particular to the paragraphs where it refers to the appointment of Anton Attard in August 2010. For correctness’ sake, it must be emphasised that the appointment of Attard as CEO of PBS followed a public call on local papers in March 2010 and was made following a rigorous and independent selection process.

The selection process was initiated by Clare Vassallo-Thake in December 2009 when she was chairwoman at the public broadcaster and included the appointment of an independent firm to oversee all stages.

The selection process continued under the same rules when I was appointed PBS chairman.

In all, 14 applicants responded to the public call and were considered for the CEO post. PwC supervised all stages of the selection process which included three interview sessions by different panels. PwC made its final recommendations to the PBS board of directors and the board then approved the identified candidate in May 2010. Attard started working at PBS in September of the same year.

The then government was not involved at any stage of the selection process; neither did it intervene or even attempt to intervene with me personally or with any other member of the board on behalf of any of the candidates.
