A pair of bungling thieves robbed a terrified taxi driver at knife-point after getting the cabbie to drop them at their doorstep.

Michael Johnson and Tony Walker were jailed after admitting robbing their victim of his takings and sat nav in the West Midlands on June 29.

West Midlands Police revealed that Johnson, 29, and 23-year-old Walker had compounded their error by also getting the cab to pick them up at one of the pair's homes.

After directing the taxi driver to Waterson Croft in the Chelmsley Wood area of Solihull, near Birmingham, the pair robbed their victim.

Blundering Walker, who wielded the knife, was then spotted running into the block of flats where he lives - which is in the same street.

When police searched his flat they recovered the sat nav.

Both men had been picked up in Audley Road, Birmingham, where Johnson lives, before deciding to threaten the driver.

Johnson was convicted of three counts of robbery, including offences from two other separate incidents, and jailed for five years in total.

Walker received four years and six months behind bars after being convicted of robbery and possession of a knife.

The men, who pleaded guilty to the offences, were both sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

Speaking after sentencing, Detective Constable Dave Mason of West Midlands Police labelled the duo a pair of "hapless thugs".

He said: "The taxi driver was able to supply us with a clear description of the offenders and had said that one man had a bandage wrapped around his head.

"When Johnson was searched at our custody suite we found a bandage that matched the description, hidden in his underwear.

"They obviously knew that we had a lot of incriminating evidence and they did the right thing by pleading guilty at court.

He added: "We hope that this conviction brings some comfort to the victim who was subjected to what must have been a terrifying ordeal."
