Malta Air Traffic Services is to invest some €28 million in its facilities by 2019, Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said today.

The investment is part of a commitment the company has with the European Union, the minister said.

Dr Zammit Lewis praised the company for having managed to double its profit over the past three years while paying a €500,000 dividend into the Consolidated Fund, saying this was a "clear sign of the company's sound management".

The company is working on an upgrade to its Air Traffic Management system, with plans afoot to build a new air traffic control tower, replace the primary radar in Dingli, and introduce aeronautical message handling and automated dependent surveillance broadcasts.

The Tourism Minister was speaking at MATS' annual general meeting. He thanked the company's board, management and employees for their work.
