Rowing: The CAS has rejected an appeal by 17 Russian rowers against their ban from the Rio Games. Last week governing body FISA ruled that six Russians were eligible for the Games but banned 17, plus two coxes, after ruling that they did not meet the IOC’s new criteria of being regularly drug-tested outside Russia.

Athletics: The CAS will deliver a ruling on Jamaican discus thrower Jason Morgan’s appeal against his omission from the country’s Olympic team based on written submissions instead of through a hearing. Sport’s highest court did not reveal when the ruling, to be made by a three-member CAS panel, would be disclosed, however. Correspondence between CAS and Morgan’s lawyer Emir Crowne indicated that while the sport’s governing body (IAAF) submitted a letter, the responded (Jamaica Athletics) did not file a reply.

Cycling: The UCI has announced an expanded WorldTour calendar for 2017 that will see the series host premier level races in five countries, including Britain and the United States, for a first time. A total of 10 new events were awarded three-year licences to join a series that will take the peloton to 15 countries over a nine-month period, with the Tour Down Under kicking off the 2017 season from January 17-22.

Motor Racing: Former Ferrari driver Chris Amon has died at the age of 73, family of the New Zealand motorsport great said yesterday. Amon was part of a trio of New Zealand drivers competing in F1 in the 1960s alongside Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme. Bad luck was often cited as the key reason for Amon’s lack of F1 success, with former world champion Mario Andretti once famously saying: “If he became an undertaker, people would stop dying.”
