China has unveiled a prototype elevated bus that can carry 300 passengers while allowing cars to pass under it.

The TEB-1 is 22 metres long, 7.8 metres wide and 4.8 metres high. A video of its concept had gone viral on social media several months ago.

The prototype will be tested in the port city of Qinhuangdao over the next months, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

It promises to ferry large amounts of people without disrupting traffic or forcing city planners to invest in costly underground transport infrastructure.

Its 300 passenger capacity means it can carry almost as many people as an Airbus A330-300, and the Chinese government's claims that the buses will eventually move as many as 1,200 people in one go suggest there are plans to link multiple elevated buses together.

Perhaps Malta Public Transport will consider swapping its China-built fleet for these newer models in a few years' time.
