It may be poor consolation to Tony Barbaro Sant (July 28) to know that I’ve been without a telephone landline since the beginning of July and, again, this is because some reckless workers were demolishing a property to which telephone cables were attached.

I am an old pensioner, 86 years of age. I am a GO subscriber and, for peace of mind and tranquillity, I make use of the Telecare service. Connectivity with this service is reliant on the GO telephone landline.

Added to this is the fact that I have a package contract with GO, including the internet service, which, of course, is interrupted too. This means I cannot paymy bills via internet until the line is restored; standing for hours in queues is too tiresome for me nowadays.

Needless to say numerous calls were made to GO customer care by myself, relatives and friends but to no avail.

I must be fair and give GO their due. They gave me a concession of some 30 minutes of free time on mobile calls.

As a passing remark, I am beginning to doubt the wisdom of advocating pro-business police by people who should know better.

Maltese mentality being what it is, such a remark can easily be interpreted as a licence to abuse, taking liberties, cutting corners and bypassing rules, all in the name of creating work and encouraging business.

Recent contributions to this newspaper by top bankers could be interpreted as a reflection of what I’m on about.

One should be cautious and more discreet in the choice of works when promoting business. No obstacles should be put in the way of entrepreneurs.

We all agree with that but caution should not be thrown out to the wind all in the name of business as seems to be the case here, occurring quite often and in too many instances.
