Novak Djokovic beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3 7-5 in the Rogers Cup final in Toronto last weekend to secure a record-extending 30th ATP Masters 1000 title.

World no.1 Djokovic, playing his first tournament since his shock third-round exit at Wimbledon last month, lifted the Rogers Cup for a fourth time having previously triumphed in 2007, 2011 and 2012.

The Serbian, who has beaten world number six Nishikori in each of their last nine encounters, has won 11 titles and reached 14 finals in his last 15 ATP Masters 1000 appearances.

While never truly tested by Nishikori, Djokovic returned to something similar to his top form in Toronto before heading off for the Rio Olympics where he will launch his bid for a first gold medal.

In his post-match speech Djokovic kept a promise he made to a friend after paying tribute to his support team.

“With one hug I can feel all their love,” Djokovic said.

“I promised to one of my friends that if this moment happens, if I win the tournament in Toronto I would ask everybody in the stands to hug the person next to them and I will participate.”

With that he hugged the stadium announcer to huge cheers from hugging spectators.
