The editorial ‘Spotlight on human trafficking’ (July 13) is useful and timely. It merits the appreciation of the Maltese who cherish the noble values of our nation.

I was already aware of many facts mentioned in the US State Department report but I was surprised too.

What it said about Malta is a shame and I expected politicians, civil and religious authorities as well as NGOs to react. Such inertia worries me.

This newspaper’s spotlight on the report offers the opportunity to reflect and think about the consequences on our Maltese society as a result of the abuse and liberal tolerance mentioned. I am sure many will take advantage and exploit the situation for their personal interests.

We are aware of the increase in thefts, slavery through human trafficking, prostitution and many other illegalities.

This situation will surely bring about a new sort of colonialism and undermine the very fabric of society. We, the people, should insist nobody is exploited and all are treated with due respect.

The authorities, of course, are ultimately responsible to ensure Malta has the highest standards possible and would not allow abuse or exploitation or, worse, become known as a hub for human trafficking.

Such activity by unscrupulous manipulators is intolerable and must be both condemned and stopped. The Maltese, in our majority, still cherish and are proud of our moral values.

We demand to be respected. Those tasked with taking the necessary action must give the matter immediate attention and rid the country of such an immoral and deplorable situation. If there is the will this is possible.

If no action is taken and no interest is shown, then, I am afraid, it can only get worse.
