A group of refugees in training for the Olympics will march into the main stadium in Rio as an independent team for the opening ceremony.

They're some of the 10 sports men and women who will make up the independent Olympic team of refugees at the games in Rio.

"I feel very excited. This is the first chance for the refugees to participate in the Olympics and to give us hope, for us to encourage the young generations of fellow refugees," one of them said.

"We're going to meet with so many people, it's not me alone who's going to be running so we're going to meet the world."

The refugee Olympic squad's been hand-picked by the International Olympic Committee to help highlight the plight of refugees worldwide.

They'll join 11, 000 athletes in the Olympic Village for the games beginning on August 5, expected to draw a million tourists to Rio.
