Some 100 wardens held a protest this morning outside G4S offices in San Gwann, calling for better salaries.
According to the General Workers Union, the protest held outside the building of the company which employs the wardens is the first step in a series of actions to be taken by the Union if the wardens do not get a raise.
Union Secretary for Professionals, finances and services Charles Galea said that wardens were being forced to work in dangerous situations but they were paid less than security guards.
Mr Galea said that the wardens were being paid less than €5 an hour.
“These wardens, who I must say take their jobs very seriously, are being forced to work in hostile environments but they are not being paid enough. It’s all about issuing traffic fines,” Mr Galea said.
He pointed out that while there were talks for a revamp of the system, everything was still very much up in the air.
“The wardens are in favour of the changes but they cannot agree to anything until there is a rise in salaries.”
Mr Galea said that the union was giving the company a week and if things did not change until then, GWU would be taking things further. On what action would be taken, Mr Galea said he would divulge more details at a later stage.
