The 12th edition of the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival (KISFF) is being held on Friday and Saturday at the Garden of Rest in Floriana.

Giant effigies of Pope John Paul II, smashing of ceramic frog statuettes, free-falling through space, a most unusual menagerie of animals where fish cannot swim and possums cannot run are just some of the wondrous visual delights that patrons can enjoy this year.

This unique festival focuses exclusively on short films, hand-picked from emerging and established film-makers around the world.

Award-winning films from North Korea, Chad, Myanmar, Georgia, Belgium, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Algeria, Portugal and Malta run alongside works from the UK, US, Canada and Germany.

Four hours of programming will provide a mixture of documentary, fiction, drama, comedy and experimental shorts running over two nights, with a second experimental screen, Neck of the Woods, running simultaneously.

This year’s jury consists of producer Katryna Sammut Tagliaferro, actor Paul Portelli, writer Alex Vella Gera and film-maker Joe Spray. They will pick the film to win the Golden Dot Award. There is also an audience award in which members of the public vote.

Deejays will play from midnight onwards and delicious food is served throughout the evening.

• Doors open at 8pm and screenings begin at 9pm. Tickets cost €7 per night and can be purchased at the door.
