Britain’s Conservative Party has Theresa May, as the new Prime Minister, to lead Britain out of the European Union.
In November, the US too will most probably celebrate itsfirst female US president inhistory if Hillary Clinton succeeds in her endeavors to beat Donald Trump.

Clinton is a very smart woman but also quite reckless. She and her husband, Bill, like to play too close to the edge and sometimes go over. They parse words to parry attacks.
They possess a sort of preternatural political ability but also a political paranoia. With the Clintons, you have to accept the swirl of madness with the political mastery. They have a constant flirtation with self-destruction but, in the end, they are the ultimate survivors.

The Republican contender for president, Trump, is throwing all kinds of things at her, outlandish things. But Clinton keeps going forward. She’s a sort of Wonder Woman in which the evasion of calamity creates an expanding sense of invincibility.

If Clinton made mistakes (she was investigated by the FBI over the e-mail scandal and the Benghazi inquiries when she was secretary of state), how about Trump? He had a ‘university’ that wrung thousands of dollars out of credulous students with get-rich-quick promises and which was linked to an extremely shady seminar programme that plagiarised course materials from an old real estate manual. It is now subject to lawsuits, some of which are being heard by a distinguished judge from Indiana who Trump slammed as a biased “Mexican”.

When one compares Clinton to Trump, her shortcomings shrink. Clinton’s survival instinct will very likely weather whatever Trump and the Republicans throw at her. In the end, the Clinton magic will remain intact.
