Blackheath Rugby CC were the 19th cricket team to visit Malta this year. Their veterans selection took on their counterparts from the Marsa Cricket Club in a 30-over encounter.

Marsa Vets batted first and reached the impressive tally of 168 runs for the loss of two wickets.

Paul Bradley was the shining light with 50 runs off only 36 balls. Tim Wheeler (26), Sarfraz Ali (25), Joy Ghoseroy (18), Subhas Roy (14) and Stephen Lucas (17) made useful contributions.

Andy Wolstenholme was the pick of the bowlers for Blackheath with one wicket for 17 runs.

In reply, Blackheath’s openers Kevin Acott (38) and Paul Matthews (30) put on a valuable 51 runs for the first wicket and laid the foundation for an exciting run chase.

Rick Bodenham (27) and Chris Kibble (23) kept the momentum going and, with 11 runs required off Chris Belford’s final over, Wolstenholme (20) and Peter Vaughan obliged by clinching victory for Blackheath off the final ball of the match.
