A pilot project to monitor household waste recycling habits will see participating families compete to become Iklin's top recyclers.

Families who have signed up to GreenMT's iRecycle project will be attaching specially-provided barcodes to grey garbage bags provided to them. The barcodes will allow GreenMT and Iklin local council to keep tabs on each family's recycling.

An online leaderboard will show residents who is leading the recycling pack, with the best recyclers over the project's 40-week period winning various prizes.

GreenMT plans on extending the pilot project to other localities across Malta and Gozo, company CEO Joe Attard said.

Local government parliamentary secretary Stefan Buontempo said the project would be invaluable to lawmakers as it would provide them with tangible data to base their decisions on.

Iklin mayor Anthony Dalli praised residents for their continued interest in recycling their waste. Any residents who have yet to collect grey recycling bags could do so from the local council's offices, he said.
